Background of the Study

Childhood cancer is a devastating diagnosis that affects not only the child but also their family. The psychological impact of childhood cancer can be profound, with parents and caregivers often experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety, depression, and emotional distress. In Bauchi State, where access to cancer care is limited, families often face additional challenges such as financial strain, stigma, and a lack of psychological support services (Aliyu & Ibrahim, 2023).

The psychological burden on families dealing with childhood cancer can have lasting effects on their mental health and their ability to provide care for the child. Studies have shown that the stress experienced by caregivers can affect their quality of life and influence their coping mechanisms (Oluwaseun & Bamidele, 2024). Understanding the specific psychological challenges faced by families in Bauchi State is essential for developing supportive interventions that can improve their mental health and overall well-being.

Statement of the Problem

While much attention is given to the medical treatment of childhood cancer, the psychological impact on families is often overlooked. There is limited research on the mental health challenges faced by families of children with cancer in Bauchi State, and this study seeks to address this gap by examining the emotional, social, and financial stressors experienced by these families.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the psychological impact of childhood cancer on families in Bauchi State.
  2. To identify the emotional, social, and financial challenges faced by families of children with cancer.
  3. To recommend strategies for providing psychological support to families of children with cancer in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the psychological impact of childhood cancer on families in Bauchi State?
  2. What emotional, social, and financial challenges do families of children with cancer face in Bauchi State?
  3. What interventions can be put in place to provide psychological support to these families?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Families of children with cancer in Bauchi State experience significant psychological distress, including stress, anxiety, and depression.
  2. Financial strain and lack of emotional support are major challenges for families of children with cancer.
  3. Psychological support interventions improve the mental health and coping mechanisms of families dealing with childhood cancer.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on families of children diagnosed with cancer in Bauchi State, with data collected through surveys, interviews, and psychological assessments. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported emotional distress and challenges in recruiting participants due to the stigma surrounding childhood cancer.
